Frequently Asked Questions

What Type of Editing Do I Need?

In a perfect world, every book would go through the entire editorial process. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world, and this question is one only you can answer depending on your unique situation, skill set, and budget. I’d be happy to provide recommendations to help you decide after performing a free sample edit.

What Are Your Credentials?

I have a B.A. in creative writing—not literature. I have been working in editorial since 2013, and I have been editing fiction since 2014 when I worked for an independent publishing house. My clients’ satisfaction speaks volumes about the level of service I provide self-publishing authors. You can read more about me here. I’d be happy to show you my style of editing with a free sample edit, and I can provide references if you’re interested.

What Genres Do You Specialize In?

Most of my clients have been in the romance, fantasy, and literary fiction genres. However, I specialize in character-driven novels, and that can manifest across multiple genres.

What Don’t You Edit?

I will not take on any manuscript that I do not think is ready. My goal is to help you, not bleed you dry ($$$).

I only work in fiction. I no longer take on nonfiction, self-help, memoir, or poetry.

I avoid taking on plot-driven or thematic-driven novels. This often manifests in the mystery genre and sci-fi that is not character-driven.

I do not mind taking on novels with Christian themes or religious characters, but I do not work in Christian Lit or spiritual/religious fiction.

I also recommend that all non-POC authors hire a POC editor if their main character is a POC. They can help with character recommendations better than I can because of their unique lived experiences.

Will You Destroy My Own Unique Style?

Absolutely not. The goal of editing is not to “chop,” “butcher,” “criticize,” or “massacre” a manuscript; the goal is to help the author convey their vision properly. The author is free to accept or reject any recommendation I make. I may advise against certain stylistics if I believe it will hinder the reading experience, but my reasoning will be clearly spelled out and/or notated with Microsoft Word Tracking Changes, which gives the author full control over what edits are implemented.

How Much Is It Going to Cost?

I provide every client with a free sample edit. From there, I will be able to determine a custom quote for your project.
